Special fx theatrical contact lenses have allowed costume designers to change the look and appearance of actors since the 1960’s. In the early 1960’s, optometrists discovered a way to add pigment and patterns to contact lenses. Whether cat eyes were used to give an actress feline characteristics, or complete whiteout lenses were used to make an actor appear zombie-like or blind, this amazing new discovery revolutionized the movie industry. The new special fx theatrical contact lenses that were discovered, allowed costume designers to create dramatic and realistic characters. These hard lenses were somewhat uncomfortable to the actors and could not be worn for long periods of time, which caused production to slow. Getting fitted for these contacts was a scary experience in itself, as an actual mold would have to be taken of the actors eye. In the late 1970’s, soft contact lenses were discovered. These lenses were harder to tint, but the advantages outweighed the disadvantages. Soft lenses were much easier on the eye, and the actor could often wear the contact throughout the day. They also did not require such a dramatic or painful fitting. Today, millions of patterns are available to the general public, as well as the entertainment industry. Special fx theatrical contact lenses may be obtained through internet retailers, in your local costume shop, or through your eye care provider.
